This background is inextricably linked with the myth and fact of the Ninja in feudal Japan.

The present Grandmaster is Dr Masaaki Hatsumi, and was born in Noda City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan on December 2nd 1931. Throughout the 1950's and 1960's he travelled every weekend across Japan to study with Toshitsugu Takamatsu of Kashiwara City, Nara Prefecture, from whom he received his initiation into the ways and psyche of the Ninja. Eventually Dr Masaaki Hatsumi inherited from Toshitsugu Takamatsu the ultimate authority and the standing of Grandmaster(Soke) of the following combat systems.

34th Soke of the Togakure Ryu Ninjutsu.
28th Soke of the Gyokko Ryu Koshijutsu
28th Soke of the Kukishinden Ryu Happo Hiken
26th Soke of the Shinden Fudo Ryu Dakentaijutsu
21st Soke of the Gyokushin Ryu Ninjutsu
18th Soke of the Koto Ryu Koppojutsu
18th Soke of the Gikan Ryu Koppojutsu
17th Soke of the Tagaki Yoshin Ryu Jutaijutsu
14th Soke of the Kumogakure Ryu Ninpo

Kukishinden Ryû Happo Hikenjutsu "School of the Nine Demon Gods" Dr. Hatsumi is the 28th Soke.

Characteristics
This school is most famous in the Bujinkan for its many different weapon techniques.
It is a complete fighting system and battlefield art based on unarmed fighting, bo, hanbo, yari and naginata techniques as well as techniques for throwing projectiles. Techniques are done assuming the combatants are wearing armor, and the movements reflect this. This system may have been used as a naval art, and consequently the movements are designed to be used on a ship that is slippery and rocking. Bo ryaku, or special strategy, was also taught, as was Sui & Ka ren, (use of fire and water), Onshinjutsu (disguise and invisibility techniques) Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido, studied Kukishinden Ryu Happo Hikenjutsu, under Kuki clan, and later he created a new system, called Kukishin aikido. There are several ryuha (schools), but only a few of them kept the ninja tradition, the rest of them lost or changed that aspect. Literally translated: "nine demons' divine transmission", "eight secret weapons arts".

until two or three years ago I had no idea of what my age was this simply because I did not want to know, however I do know that I was born in the twenty third year of showa (1889) I am bewildered by the appearance of my face as it looks now but the reason for this is, I have not looked at myself in the mirror in some thirty years. Even with this bedraggled look I am still what most people would consider an energetic man. If most people were to go for a walk for an hour they would usually cover about four miles however I usually cover that in about half of one hour...more

The beginnings of Ninjutsu as we know it in the UK - by Steve Popejoy

Having just spent an evening with David catching up on nearly 20 years I paused to reflect on the beginnings of Ninjutsu as we know it in the UK and in particular the Forest of Dean.

I had previously studied Kendo and Iaijutsu and felt the need to expand my somewhat limited knowledge when I chanced upon an advert in "Fighters" for a seminar of Ninjutsu to be held in a scout hut at Pinewood in Croydon. It was here that I was introduced to Bo Munthe and Brian Mc Carthy, both at that time shodan's. To say that it was a life changing event would be an understatement. And I returned to the Forest with my head full of new techniques! I had been running a Kendo club at the Heywood sports centre but felt that I wanted to give 100 percent to this new discipline and upon my announcement of this intention the whole club, to a man, stepped forward and wanted some! It had not been my intention to lead this venture, it just seemed my enthusiasm for knowledge put me in the line of fire. I organised a visit from Bo Munthe and we literally (I mean literally) 'took off'. There followed a grading for me and our entry into the 'Bujinkan Dojo Ishizuka Society" and a series of seminars through which our numbers grew... more
