The mind is in a constant state of conflict with the body and spirit. If you can create distance from your mind, you can better battle your thoughts, which are often the obstacle to the achievement of magokoro ??, or pure mind. As stated before, “the biggest battle is within”, and this battle is always with [...]

I would like to draw everyone’s attention to the growing blog of local resident Buyu Paul Masse. I have always felt that Paul has achieved a level of internalization of Soke’s Budo and teachings that is inspiring.  Paul has been here training as long as I can remember, and he is not as well known as [...]

Last Sunday at Hombu training, I asked Soke to write the Characters for “Fudo Myo”, but changing the last character ? to the Character ?,meaning mysterious.  I thought given this year’s theme that this was a clever expression and deep play on words. Soke clearly noticed my attempt to play with words, as he often does, [...]

Soke often tells us that what he is doing is not something that can be taught. After many years trying to recreate his movement and somehow misunderstanding the meaning of the above message, I have given up, allowing for the following realization. It cannot be done, and Soke is telling the truth. [...]

Recently, I was fortunate enough to be invited by Soke to attend his writer’s guild monthly party. At this event, I was surrounded by several artists, writers and various other creative types. It was an admirable experience to socialize with Soke outside of the typical Bujinkan event and learn more about this environment [...]

The Bujinkan has been popular with the media these days. Recently CBS news visited the Hombu for an interview with Soke and to film the training. The best part was that I got to toss Lucy Craft onto the mat! Check it out http://www.cbsnews. com/sections/ i_video/main5002 51.shtml? id=4242971n

I?m not one for Bujinkan commercialism and I don?t think my good friend Alex Meehan is either, but when in Ireland he had one of his students filmed the training. In result, Alex has put together a very nice DVD of the training from those 2 days in Ireland, including the first night of training [...]

When I was younger, I was basically a perfectionist. I wanted all things to be perfect. I can remember times that I expended tremendous energy attempting to keep things in perfect order. Then naturally, as I matured and developed in life an in Budo, I was able to see that actually imperfection dominates and [...]

The book is out in some areas and the comments are coming in, and therefore I?m inspired to write this post in response to some of the comments and questions and unfortunate misconceptions. To some, this book is a lifeline for training, hopefully answering all the questions about the secrets of Budo Taijutsu. However, if you [...]

I believe that Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu is a combat art. We are trained to fight and if necessary, kill. We are also, however, trained not to fight unless there is no other alternative. We are trained to be peaceful and not seek out fights, but should one arise we are taught to handle it with great efficiency and end it as quickly as possible. Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu teaches one to survive any situation.

If i may be so bold as to offer a little enlightenment to the first post "Don't Mind," It is important not to distance the mind from the facets of 3 in mind, body and spirit - for all must work as one. The goal is to achieve a balance between the 3. It is by understanding balance within that manifests harmony and totality or Magakoro. It is important to accept the battle within and recognize the lessons to be learned rather than fighting or battling with your thoughts which is much like pushing your ego and mind chatter under the Carpet only to resurface later. If your life is unbalanced this will show in your taijutsu even to such a small extent. Your energy field will also be out of sync and so you become consumed with EGO. I believe that when sensei say's "Teach how to live, not to fight" he is also talking about achieving harmony in mind, body and spirit. To achieve this Magakoro we must learn to be in balance on all aspects. If you can't accept your mind chatter and release it, you will undoubtaedly fight with your inner self and will create and manifest unbalance in other aspects of your life. Learning the true art of balance through reaching an appropriate meditative state will allow you to balance all 3 which will reflect in harmonious resonance in life and within your training.

Hi all I absolutely agree with you, Arnaud. Once you get to learn what Bujinkan an Mushin is all about, you can't be anything else but happy! Doug, your post is essential to the understanding of life. In my opinion, being able to let go of your mind, and focus on what you want instead of what you don't want, is the key to happiness. People have to stop focusing on the negative sides of life, because what you focus on, you will get more of... As Soke said on my last trip to Japan: "I am teaching you to be real human beings...Congratulations!" Just let go and let God! Best regards Henrik, Denmark

During my summer trip to Tokyo, I had the opportunity to speak with Sôke during training (thank you for your help Craig). At one point he said that we should ?be happy? in our lives. This is not what someone teaching how to fight would advise you to do! Being happy and living a happy life is the real thing. Nothing else really matters, and this is why in the Bujinkan, we are learning how to be happy, by learning a fighting system. As I often tell my students, if the Bujinkan was simply a fighting system, due to the fact that we will never meet the real fight (Jissen) in the real life (Jissen), it must serve other purposes. The Bujinkan system taught by Sensei is really something that shapes our vision of life in a different manner, and missing this is missing the whole point about training. Be happy as much as you can, enjoy your trainings, improve your skills and little by little, this feeling of happiness in the Dojo will leak out and fill in your own personal life. As I said during the speech I did in 2006 at the Daikomyo Sai party: ?in the Bujinkan we are not learning how to kill but how to live? this is what I meant and still mean it today. Thank you for introducing Paul's blog! His phtography is luminous. He's got an amazing ability to be present and "see" with his taijutsu, camera, and words.
