Bujinkan Togakure Ryu Ninpo Happo Biken Seminar - 25th & 26th October 2008
Alex Meehan 12th Dan & David Oliver 10th Dan |
This two day seminar will concentrate on the basics of Hatsumi Sensei’s martial arts, as well as on the subject of this year’s theme – Ninpo Taijutsu.
In particular, it is anticipated that the first half of training each day will focus on material taken from the first two books of the Tenchijin Ryaku no Maki, or Scroll of Heaven, Earth & Man.
For those unfamiliar with this document, it is an instructors manual created by Hatsumi Soke in the 1970s as a means of documenting the basics of the taijutsu portion of his martial art. The scroll is made up of three distinct parts:
• Ten Ryaku no Maki (Scroll of Heaven): Rolling, breakfalling, leaping, sanshin no kata, kihon happo no kata, kamae, muto dori and the use of various fists as adaptive weapons.
• Chi Ryaku no Maki (Scroll of Earth): Hand and body escapes, hand locking and restraints, kneeling techniques, locking techniques, throwing techniques, strangling techniques
• Jin Ryaku no Maki (Scroll of Man): various kata taken from the nine schools taught in the Bujinkan.
In addition, to this material, we will also cover the Santo Tonko no Kata from the Togakure Ryu Ninpo Taijutsu, looking at how it maintains relevance in modern usage.

Togakure Ryû Ninpo Taijutsu “School of the Hiding Door”
It is the second oldest of the Bujinkan schools.
Brief History
After a lost battle, a samurai, Nishina Yukihiro found refuge in the mountains of Iga. In a village called Togakushi on the Togakure Mountain he met a priest, So-o, who was practicing Shugendo, a religion based on magic. There, Yukihiro learned Shugendo and ninjutsu. His son, Daisuke, changed his name to Daisuke Togakure and, in 1161, created Togakure Ryu. He became its first Soke. Except for a relatively short period of notoriety prior to the reign of the Tokugawas, the art lived quietly in the hearts of just a few people.

The Bujinkan KoShin Dojo has been teaching Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu (Bujinkan Ninjutsu) for over the past 20 years. With it's Senior Instructor Shidoshi David Oliver who has been training in this art for over 25 years.
Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu training is generally referred to as "Taijutsu", and is composed of both armed and unarmed methods of fighting. Unarmed methods are broken down into three primary categories, dakentaijutsu (striking forms), jūtaijutsu (grappling forms), and taihenjutsu (body movement skills). Much of the basic taijutsu taught to beginners comes from six primary lineages in the Bujinkan compendium, namely Kotō-ryū, Gyokko-ryū, Shinden Fudō-ryū, Takagi Yōshin-ryū, Kuki Shinden-ryū, and Togakure-ryū.
Many weapons are taught: sword (bamboo shinai, wooden bokken, dull metal sword iaitō or swords made by soft modern materials), staffs of various lengths (bō, jō, hanbō), rope, spear, tessen (iron fan), naginata (Japanese halberd) and more. Weapons are categorised into four primary classes - sticks, blades, flexibles, and projectiles.
The Bujinkan Dōjō method is named Bujinkan Budō Taijutsu
(武神館武道体術), and is a collection of nine martial arts family lineages,
called Ryūha. The art was previously called Bujinkan Ninpō Taijutsu and before that it was known under the more generic name ofninjutsu
